Kelly’s Korner Blog: Stop the Holiday Hangover: How to Keep Customers in January

Hi friends,

Let’s talk about the giant, predictable sigh that happens every year on December 25th. The inbox slows down until the New Year. Customers and leads disappear into a post-holiday fog. Everyone is both exhausted and deeply committed to “figuring things out after the New Year.”

If you’ve ever looked at your December numbers and thought, “…hello? Anyone out there?”… trust me, I’ve been there. But here’s the good news:

January is one of the most underrated months for retention.

People are excited to hit the New Year strong. They open emails again. They start planning, dreaming, buying, and booking, especially in travel. I see vacation rental companies’ inquiries and bookings spike every single year within the first two weeks of the New Year

The key is making sure you don’t disappear from their inboxes during the fog. Because retention isn’t reactive, it’s planted ahead of time.

And that brings me to two of my favorite campaign types that keep your audience warm long after the holiday lights come down:

1. Re-Engagement Emails

For subscribers who haven’t purchased yet.

These are your quiet readers. They signed up, they poked around, maybe they clicked a link once, and then life got busy. They haven’t taken action yet, but they could. Re-engagement campaigns remind them why they signed up in the first place.

These emails sound like: “Hey, we’re still here and we’ve got something worth your time.”

They help you:

  • Wake up passive subscribers
  • Prevent your list from going stale
  • Turn “lurkers” into first-time buyers or bookers
  • Keep your sender reputation healthy

2. Win-Back Emails

For past customers who haven’t purchased or booked in a while.

These are your former VIPs. They know you. They trust you. They’ve already experienced what you offer, which makes them one of your most valuable segments. They just need a gentle, well-timed nudge.

Win-back campaigns sound like: “You loved us once! Want to do it again?”

They help you:

  • Bring old customers back into your ecosystem
  • Increase repeat revenue
  • Build loyalty when customers are ready to reset habits
  • Strengthen relationships during key planning or booking periods

What Should You Send in January?

You don’t need to overhaul your entire strategy. Start simple. Offer value. Remind them why they signed up. Reconnect with the humans behind the email addresses.

Your customers want to hear from you. They just need the right message at the right moment. And when you show up during that quiet window between New Year’s confetti and real-life chaos settling back in, you stand out in all the right ways.

More on segmentation, timing, and advanced win-back workflows soon (you know I love a good segmentation deep dive). But for now, just remember:

A quiet inbox doesn’t mean a cold audience. It means opportunity.

See you in the next Kelly’s Korner,
Kelly
